The Ab Wheel is almost as prehistoric as the dinosaurs. This thing has been around forever and infomercial companies rip it off every 10 years and re-introduce it as if it’s some new way of doing ab exercises.
I’ve gotta say, I personally like and use the Ab Wheel. However I’m in really good shape. I tried using it when I first started working out years ago, and the next day I woke up with low back pain so bad, it felt like I had been in a rear-end collision the night before.
I thought it would be get better and perhaps it was just the pain of a new workout routine. Nope, it progressively got worse and worse until I went to the doctor. He of course advised that I stop doing it.
I’m going to keep this review short and sweet. So here’s my final verdict:
The Ab Wheel is ok if you’re in top physical condition, but I would absolutely not recommend it to a beginner. It is way too strenuous, especially if you already have low back problems. A beginner needs to understand the core foundation of abdominal training, and this can’t be learned with a machine. You need to read Ab Truths.
Even though I recommend the Ab Wheel to those who are in great shape, I still have really mixed opinions about it. Since there’s no support for your low back to force it to stay in a straight line, I’m concerned about the long-term effects that could be caused with prolonged use. There’s been medical reports that have sited the Ab Wheel for causing the pelvis to protrude forward. Rather that’s true or false, who knows. They also say, that’s one of the reasons it’s not sold by major retailers anymore.
I’m also conflicted on recommending the Ab Wheel to those who are already in shape because of the obvious… If you’re in shape and have great abs, YOU’RE OBVIOUSLY DOING EVERYTHING RIGHT and therefore don’t need the assistance of the Ab Wheel.
